Medicaid Medicaid is the government assistance program to low-income families. Not all low income families however, qualify for this particular type of health insurance. They must fit into an eligibility group that is recognized by state and federal law and each state has different eligibility requirements. This nationally-funded and state administered health insurance does not send payment to you; instead they worry about paying the health care providers. It is important to note that sometimes you will have to pay part of the bill which would be noted as a copayment, but overall Medicaid will cover most of your expenses.
